Each time she entered the room, she carried a lightness—a calming presence that uplifted us in our lowest moments.
My loved one was admitted to the MICU at the Gibbon Building. He was later transferred to the Neuro ICU, where we met a compassionate team of nurses and doctors. After thoughtful discussions, we made the decision to proceed with the Gift of Life team exploring the possibility of organ donation. The team supported me in staying overnight with him, allowing us to share our final moments together, talking and holding hands.
During the morning shift change, Paige introduced herself as his nurse, assuring me that she would keep him comfortable and cared for. She also let me know that she was there for me, offering support in any way I needed. In an effort to provide some respite, she encouraged me to take a short walk for coffee and fresh air. When our family arrived, she welcomed them warmly and took the time to explain everything with kindness and clarity.
As the final word came that organ donation would not be possible and we prepared to say our goodbyes, Paige remained by my side. She ensured he was comfortable and provided gentle guidance throughout. Each time she entered the room, she carried a lightness—a calming presence that uplifted us in our lowest moments. Her kindness allowed us to focus on celebrating memories rather than being consumed by sadness.
Throughout the day, my family and I shared how much we appreciated her compassion. My daughter even remarked that she wished Paige could be her little sister. When the evening shift change arrived, I felt a deep sadness at her departure, but she left us with a heartfelt keepsake—a printout of his heartbeat. The care and empathy Paige showed on that day turned one of the hardest moments of our lives into a time of love, connection, and peace. I have no doubt he felt it too.
