Following proper BLS guidelines, Paige would administer lifesaving chest compressions and breaths to this stranger.
Paige and her husband were heading to Kroger in Fishers, to do some grocery shopping. When they arrived, however, it would be no ordinary trip. After watching a police officer speed through the parking lot and then run into the store with AED in hand, Paige knew that something wasn’t right. Since there were no other first responders to have arrived at that time, Paige chased after the officer to see if they needed any further assistance. Upon arriving to the scene, Paige found a man laying on the floor. He was unresponsive, cyanotic, apneic, and pulseless. Despite the other bystanders worried and not knowing what to do, Paige acted. Immediately beginning CPR, she worked alongside the police officer to begin working to save this man’s life. Following proper BLS guidelines, Paige would administer lifesaving chest compressions and breaths to this stranger.

After EMS arrived and took over, they miraculously were able to get the man back and take him to the hospital. After the incident, the police asked if Paige was okay with exchanging contact information with the family in case they wanted to reach out to her, and of course, she said yes. Later, we would find out, via the family’s updates, that this man was emergently taken to the Cath Lab upon arriving to the Indianapolis Hospital. With a 100% occlusion to his LAD, the otherwise healthy man’s family would quickly learn the severity of what that meant for their loved one. After opening the artery back up, this man would be extubated the next day, and was discharged home over the weekend to be back at home with his family safe and sound.

I cannot express how proud we all are of Paige here on CIC, and I wanted to extend this amazing story to you as I am sure you would appreciate hearing this as well. The work we do here is heroic, but it goes to show that the knowledge we gain here at work and throughout school does not stop existing when we walk out of these hospital walls. I hope that there is some way where we can recognize Paige for her heroic actions and quick mind because she really did save this man’s life. Paige is a very compassionate, intelligent, and devoted nurse, and she deserves this without a single doubt.
