Staff did not bring up discharge plans except to say if I couldn’t walk longer distances I would need to go to a rehab facility and that could occur soon. I had no intention of going to a facility and had strong family support who wanted me to come home and had in fact rearranged the first floor for my use. The morning of the 15th, Pam and Joe were assigned to me. I told them that my goal was to be discharged to my home. They assured me that they would help me make that happen. They were really the first staff I remember looking at me as a person. Pam set everything in motion, doing all the behind the scenes work to coordinate with several groups of physicians to make sure that I had what I needed in place. By that afternoon, Pam and my daughter were loading me into the car with the O2 tank and sending me home. It was due to their efforts that I was able to be in my own home. Their compassionate understanding of me, their patient, their thorough follow-up on what needed to be done, and their problem solving to get me there made me feel that they put me and my needs first.
