My shy little six-year-old daughter had been admitted to the Good Samaritan Pediatric Wing. We woke up the next morning after a late night in the ER under the care of Nurse Pam. Nurse Pam wasn't just trying to take care of M's extreme physical needs. She continuously addressed M with a genuine interest in connecting with her despite how sick M felt and her shy personality. Nurse Pam saw the sweet girl she was underneath all that. Nurse Pam gently teased her and always tried to genuinely make M smile. Nurse Pam was rooting for M to get better and could tell M's physical symptoms were improving. M began to display more personality, moving from nearly non-responsive to engaging in conversations and smiling. After two days under her care, Nurse Pam told us she would likely not see us since she would be off the next few days and was sure M would be discharged before she returned to work. M told me she wanted Nurse Pam to stay and she let me tell Pam how she felt even though she had to go home of course. Pam made a strong connection and impression on M while taking excellent care of her. Not only did she get to know her but she passed along to the next nurse what M liked. M continued to hope Nurse Pam would be there as the days went by but I promised her we would come back to visit and we did. M's face was priceless seeing her favorite nurse who helped her recover fully and welcomed her back so warmly. I am so thankful that Nurse Pam not only helped nurse our daughter back to health but touched her heart so deeply and genuinely.
