Pam was incredibly present for the patient, helping her to understand what was happening as well as remain calm during her fast labor.
Last weekend, a young first-time mother arrived at our unit after minimal notice in active labor at 31 weeks of gestation. NVRH is not equipped with a NICU, and as a rule, we do not deliver infants earlier than 34 weeks. Pam was quick to react, making phone calls to notify the supervisor as well as the provider who had not been paged by the patient as usual. When the patient arrived Pam remained calm and comforting to the patient who was understandably scared, providing her care quickly and thoroughly. Pam was incredibly present for the patient, helping her to understand what was happening as well as remain calm during her fast labor. The patient was already fully dilated and delivered within 25 minutes of arrival at the unit. Pam was able to obtain IV access, speak with the pediatrician, and initiate the transfer process in the background as well as assist with the delivery and stabilization of the newborn. Her skills were obvious and it is clear that she is passionate about the work that she does. As a coworker, I could not have had a better nurse by my side during this experience. Pam was so soothing to the patient as well as the family amidst a difficult and unexpected time while completing all of her nursing duties. She went above and beyond for both the patient and the staff and she is so deserving of the recognition that comes with the DAISY Award.
