June 2026 Honoree
Pat Brennan, RN
Patrick was the nurse who cared for my grandmother on one of the most difficult days of my life, and because of him, that day was not quite as unbearable as it otherwise would have been.
From the moment Patrick entered the room, it was clear that his care went far beyond tasks and medications. My grandmother was heavily sedated and intubated, yet Patrick spoke to her as if she were fully present with us. He took the time to ask our family about who she was, what she loved, and what mattered to her. When we shared her love for music and Eric Clapton, he talked to her about those things, honoring her as a person — not just a patient.
Patrick not only took exceptional care of my grandmother; he also took care of us. Without us asking, he brought snacks and drinks, recognizing our needs before we even realized them ourselves. Because of him, we never had to leave my grandmother's side for anything. He gave us the gift of uninterrupted time with her during her final moments, something I will forever be grateful for.
Patrick anticipated my grandmother's needs, ensured her comfort, and treated her with dignity, compassion, and respect until the very end. His presence was calm, thoughtful, and deeply human during a moment that could have easily felt cold and clinical.
I am a nurse myself, and it can be incredibly difficult to watch others care for the people I love. I know what good nursing looks like, and I also know when it falls short. With Patrick, there was never a moment of doubt. He went above and beyond in every possible way. His care was exactly what I would hope for any patient and exactly the kind of nurse I strive to be.
My grandmother passed away. I waited to write this nomination because I knew it would mean reliving one of the hardest days of my life. But on that day in the hospital, I promised myself that I would make sure Patrick was recognized for the extraordinary nurse and person that he is. He made an unbearable loss feel just a little less lonely, and because of him, my grandmother's final moments were filled with dignity, compassion, and love.
