Brittney Chance and Patience Okpala, postpartum nurses, played a critical role in saving the life of a new father. A newborn decided to come a month early and Brittney was taking care of both mom and baby when dad arrived to take them home. Dad felt ill and needed to take a rest, had shortness of breath, and appeared to be incredibly weak and disoriented. Brittney observed this and immediately called for help. Patience was nearby in the hallway and ran to her aid. The father had almost fallen off the bed and had blacked out. Both nurses assisted in getting him downstairs to the ER immediately. The father had experienced a heart attack and the nurses’ quick action helped save his life. Brittney and Patience, as postpartum nurses, embody a nurturing and warm spirit for moms and newborns. But their compassion also extends to the support person, the dad, the grandmother or whoever else is part of the experience. Their professionalism to do what is right when it is needed extends beyond patients – they truly are caregivers for whole families.
