Patricia Alex, RN, VA-BC, CCRN
A patient with a history of drug abuse was in need of long-term antibiotic therapy. The patient was concerned about having a PICC line placed as he worried that he might use the line for injecting illicit drugs. To decrease this risk, this nurse obtained approval from her manager to come in on the weekend (her days off) to start a peripheral IV so that he would not interrupt his 6-week therapy. The patient also put in 16 different nominations on different days for this nurse, with comments such as, “She has truly been a saint for my health and recovery and has gone way above and beyond what I could ever ask for.”
