Patty Smith exemplifies the kind of nurse that patients and families, as well as nurses, physicians, and other members of the health care team, recognize as an outstanding role model. There isn’t a day in which Patty doesn’t come to work with a smile. What makes it so extraordinary is that she does it despite all the challenges we face being a Regional resource for neuro-ophthalmic and uveitis care for the >3.5 million patients of SCPMG. Patients are always commenting how Patty goes that “extra mile” whenever it’s needed from staying late to give another IV infusion “ on the fly” to trying to find an appointment for our patients. She’s been able to work with all 13 medical centers of SCPMG in arranging appropriate testing at local medical centers which has been no easy task. She’s always there to lend a hand or an ‘ear’. Without Patty, I would not be able to extend such quality and service provided to our neuro-ophthalmic and uveitis patients.
