When I spoke to the patient about his concerns, he got tears in his eyes describing her care for him and how valued it made him feel.
4B is fortunate to have a kind, caring and compassionate nurse named Patricia "Trish" Durham. 4B had a patient with a LOS >30 days, and Trish provided excellent care to him and his family. There were many concerns with his progress, but he trusted Trish to be honest with him about how he was doing as well as to advocate for him. When I spoke to the patient about his concerns, he got tears in his eyes describing her care for him and how valued it made him feel. It was clear that the patient valued Trish's kindness and knowledge. She went above and beyond to keep his spirits up, even taking him on a wheelchair tour of the hospital for a change of scenery - the same four walls for thirty days certainly can get boring. Behind the scenes, Trish was advocating to the team to escalate the patient, family, and nursing concerns, to the point he was successfully transferred to get the care he needed. Trish deserves the Daisy Award because of her strong advocacy, dedication, excellent critical thinking skills, and clinical knowledge.
