During her shift, Patty received a call from a coworker at Brookdale looking for belongings for a patient that had been discharged from our unit 2 days previously. Patty took the information about the belongings as these items were essential to the patient's rehabilitation. Patty located the items and dropped them off to the patient at Brookdale after her shift. Most nurses probably would have called a family member to pick up the belongings, but not Patti. North Naples is not exactly on her way home but she gladly delivered the items for a patient she had never met. The patient was grateful that the belongings were found and brought to him.

Another recent example involved a patient that was homeless and had been on our unit for over a month. Patty had developed a relationship with this patient, often spending extra time during her rounds with him and assisting him with his ADL's. This patient required a lot of attention because he had a fractured hip, was high risk for falls and had also gone through alcohol withdrawal during his stay. Social Services was pursuing a safe discharge plan for the patient and as his discharge date got closer, Patty realized that he had only one set of clothing and no friends or family to bring in other belongings. Patti took his set of clothes home and washed them so he would have clean clothes when he was discharged.

These are just two examples, but Patty often goes above and beyond in a quiet manner and never seeks recognition for her work. She is often mentioned by patients in letters and surveys because she has an ability to make a personal connection with them and displays compassion in every interaction. She recognizes that each patient is different and has individual needs and thinks outside the box to meet their needs.
