Ms. Duran was the unit leader who ensured that two homeless veterans received gifts for Christmas by eliciting participation from the team.
Ms. Duran was nominated by her Nurse Manager in the Surgery and Dental Procedure Unit at Northwest Healthcare Center. This unit performs various dental surgical procedures, including extractions, implants, gum grafts, and jaw surgeries. Ms. Duran works alongside the dental team in the care of the veterans to successfully accomplish the necessary treatment plan.
Ms. P has observed Ms. Duran go above and beyond in caring for our veterans on many occasions. Ms. Duran takes the time to talk to the veterans and make them feel comfortable before the surgery by answering questions and addressing any concerns the patients may have. Ms. Duran has been witnessed purchasing food for our veterans while they are waiting for their clinic appointments. She has also assisted the team with shuttle/transportation after surgery to ensure veterans are safely returned to their place of residence. Additionally, Ms. Duran was the unit leader who ensured that two homeless veterans received gifts for Christmas by eliciting participation from the team. Ms. Duran organized a pancake and omelet breakfast team-building event to build an inter-departmental relationship with the Mental Health Unit, EMS, and Distribution teams.
Ms. P highlighted that she is genuinely impressed by Ms. Duran’s dedication to both the veterans she serves and her dental team. Ms. Duran’s dedication and commitment to compassionate service make her a great choice for a DAISY Award Honoree at South Texas VA, as she always exhibits the I CARE values.
