Patricia, our labor and delivery nurse, is beyond special. She exceeded any expectations we had coming into the hospital. She's an exceptional woman, nurse, and hero to us and undoubtedly many more families. Nerves were high for Y (mom) and myself as we came into labor and delivery. Unsure of what process we were about to embark on, uneasiness set in when we were told Y's water broke and dilation was slow. The minute Patricia stepped into the room she not only carried herself professionally but she brought a calmness with her. She's quick, thorough, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, empathetic. Patricia joined in on our jokes and laughs, which helped ease tension. She shared personal stories and gave us, first time parents tips, tricks, and advice. When it was time to make important decisions, she made us feel as if we had known her all our lives, as if we were family. She talked to Y like a sister guiding her instead of pressuring her to make a rash determination. As the father with no idea what it felt like to deliver a child this meant the world to me because she comforted her in a different was that I could never have in those moments. Patricia was with us until the end of the shift but the baby still was not close to being born. When we found out she was leaving we felt a true sense of sadness among us. On the flip side, after the baby was born, she was assigned to us again. She walked into the room like wonder-woman and immediately brought smiles and joy to our face.
