As co-workers and colleagues, we think we know what everyone does. However, it is not until you or your family member becomes a patient that you actually get to see what it is like to walk in their shoes on a daily basis. Recently I was able to witness this first hand. I sat many hours during the week and weekend observing Patricia go about her daily duties. Every time my family needed something she was right there when she promised something to my family member she delivered it - and 99% of the time over delivered. I witnessed her doing the same thing for other patients as well, because like I said I had nothing but time to sit and watch what was happening on that unit. What I noticed was, every time she sat down, another nurse or tech came to ask her a question or for assistance. Patricia would immediately jump up from what she was doing on the computer and go help. She was caring for her own assigned patients, troubleshooting unit issues, along with mentoring and teaching new nurses all at the same time. This was not an isolated incident. This occurred day after day. On one occasion, I heard her dealing with a very difficult, rude male patient and she still managed to keep a smile on her face and laugh about it. What stands out most about this nurse to me is that on one of my worst days, she noticed I was struggling to keep it together and she grabbed me and gave me the warmest hug. I will never forget that compassion. She didn't have to notice me, she was clearly on her way to assist one of her other patients who needed her time much more than I did, yet she noticed me and comforted me when I needed it as well. Patricia is a great role model and a true DAISY Nurse.
