I was hospitalized at Porter Adventist Hospital for a pacemaker implant to treat chronic atrial fibrillation that no longer responded to medication. Patrick was with me that first evening and night post-op as my nurse. He demonstrated unbelievable compassion, understanding, spirituality, and imagination in his nursing care. He suggested a brief walk around the nurse's station with an opportunity for me to express my feelings and concerns that were causing my increased anxiety. I did this and during our walk, I recognized my need for prayer. He quietly agreed and returned me to my room where I was able to pray, rest, and sleep.
