After a very long slow night in the ED, close to the end of the shift, a code went out overhead for the Emergency Department Parking Lot. I immediately ran out to the parking lot only to see Patrick Scheel in a car holding a lifeless, very blue newborn between the mother's legs. Patrick, very well collected, realized that the baby's umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck. He very carefully removed the cord and started to stimulate the infant to breathe. Nothing was happening, Patrick started CPR. I stayed with mom and later found out the baby started breathing and was going to be ok.
Patrick performed so well under such spontaneous stress after a very long and tiring night. He did exactly what needed to be done, he did it well, and helped save a life.

Thank you, Patrick, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
