"Nurse is another word to describe a person strong enough to tolerate anything and soft enough to understand anyone."

Since this award honors and celebrates skillful, compassionate, and exceptional care, it is the perfect recognition for someone like Patrick.

As a former healthcare employee and manager for more than 30 years, I understand the importance of putting patients first, providing excellent customer service, and delivering high-quality patient care. I am also a cancer survivor, so I have experienced healthcare from both sides. Before my surgery, I prayed for a medical team that would care for me with competence, confidence, and compassion.

Patrick became exactly what I needed.

He was professional, respectful, knowledgeable, empathetic, and genuinely friendly. From the moment he assumed my care, I felt I was in capable hands. He allowed me to sleep as long as it was safe for me to do so and then gently encouraged me to do what I needed in order to be discharged. Every time I drifted back to sleep—which happened more than once—he patiently allowed me the rest I needed without making me feel rushed.

When we discussed the possibility of going home with a catheter, I made it clear that I desperately wanted to avoid that outcome. Patrick immediately reassured me that he had whatever time was needed to help me achieve that goal. When it became clear that it would take longer than expected, he never once made me feel like an inconvenience. Instead, he graciously reminded me that we had all the time we needed.

He went above and beyond by bringing in the ultrasound machine to assess the situation so we could develop the best plan for success. His willingness to think creatively and exhaust every option demonstrated not only exceptional clinical skill but genuine dedication to my comfort and well-being.

Patrick also took the time to answer my endless questions. He looked up information, educated both my husband and me, and made sure we understood every step of my care. He connected with us on a personal level, and his wonderful sense of humor brought laughter during a stressful day. That meant more than he will ever know.

One moment that especially touched me was when I asked if he could verify the names of everyone involved in my care. Patrick went out of his way to track them down and even had each member of my medical team sign a certificate for me. That simple but thoughtful gesture perfectly reflected the kind of person he is.

Patrick is a nurse who has mastered not only the technical aspects of his profession, but also the art of caring for people. He knows his craft, generously shares his gifts with his patients, and consistently delivers world-class care.

He exemplifies Southwest Hospital's mission of providing high-quality, compassionate care that restores and improves the health of its patients. He also demonstrates tremendous pride in his hospital, his community, and his fellow healthcare professionals.

Thank you, Patrick, for answering the call to become a nurse. It is so clearly your calling. I feel incredibly blessed that you were the one who cared for me. Please keep doing what you do so well and know that you are appreciated far more than you probably realize.

Thank you, Patrick, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
