Patti Kent was working with an ICU patient and made sure the patient's wish for an anatomical donation was fulfilled. The patient grew up in the Rutland area but was now living in Oklahoma. He and his wife were here for a visit when he became ill. It became clear during the patient's hospitalization that he would not survive. The patient's wife made us aware that he had registered with Oklahoma University for an anatomical donation and made it clear this was very important to the patient. Patti called Oklahoma University, but because the patient was in Vermont, they told Patti they would not be able to fulfill the request. Patti then began calling locally. Tufts University agreed to accept the anatomical donation and indicated they would be able to take the body anytime. When all of the family had arrived and the patient was terminally extubated, he passed quickly and peacefully. Patti notified Tufts, made sure all the requirements (and there were many) were fulfilled and the body was transported to the University. The patient's wife was so thankful for all that everyone had done, but it was Patti who went above and beyond. I later spoke with the patient's wife and she wanted to make sure I told Patti that a family member had read a poem the patient had written called "Doctor" which is about anatomical donation. After the funeral, several people asked about the process for an anatomical donation. The patient's final wish of his anatomical gift had been fulfilled because of Patti.
