Despite the barriers, this nurse found a way to connect. She saw this patient as a whole person and could imagine how he came to this moment.
When a patient presents to us in crisis, their behavior can inadvertently prevent the very thing they need most-being seen whole. This patient presented to us last week in crisis and with deep pain and anger. It is a case in which connection can be hard with necessary guardrails in place for safety. Despite the barriers, this nurse found a way to connect. She saw this patient as a whole person and could imagine how he came to this moment. She kept them both in safe scenarios but didn't let that prevent her from wondering about him and experimenting with ways he could feel a sense of care and love. It is hard to join the life of a patient and family in crisis and understand where we can intervene and where we simply bear witness with love. This nurse found that space with this patient and I believe it will have a profound impact. It is no small thing to be seen and loved, even if just in small moments. Thank you for living our values of respect and partnership and for meaningfully connecting with someone who felt lost and alone.
