We admitted a baby to All Children's Hospital who was showing signs of serious medical issues. Metabolic/genetics consults had been placed and the patient was admitted to the PICU for observation. Patty was the bedside nurse and asked me to come evaluate and discuss the patient. During her admission assessment she found several lesions in the diaper area and lower back and she wanted me to evaluate the patient to see if a social work and/or Child Protection Services consult was warranted. Because of this finding, we obtained an abdominal CT scan that showed positive for a liver laceration.
Patty not only did a thorough initial assessment, she also called me immediately and coherently explained her findings, assessment and desire for me to evaluate the baby before feeding in case sedation would be needed for imaging. This reminds me that every day the nurses at All Children's provide outstanding patient care. This is a special case of extraordinary work which deserves to be documented and celebrated.
