I would like to nominate Paul Thompson for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary care and compassion he showed during one of the most devastating times of my life. My son was admitted after a suicide attempt, and in those moments when I felt overwhelmed, terrified, and heartbroken, this nurse stood out in ways I will never forget.

While some others didn’t quite know how to respond, Paul was consistently honest, kind, and compassionate. He treated my son with dignity and gentleness, attending to every medical and emotional need. He treated my son like a human in pain and not a monster with terrible injuries and emotions. Just as importantly, he also took care of me as a mother—someone who was hurting and scared for her child. He made sure I understood what was happening, that I received clear and thoughtful updates, and that every member of his team communicated openly with me.

He never made me feel like a burden for asking questions, and his calm presence gave me the reassurance I desperately needed in a situation no parent ever expects to face. His knowledge was matched by his humanity, and he reminded me that even in the worst moments, there are people who will walk alongside you with compassion and grace.

I am deeply grateful for the care Paul gave to my son and for the support he offered me during this unimaginable time. He embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. He is more than deserving of this honor.
