Paul took care of a patient that we recently had admitted on the General Medicine D service when I was the attending. The patient in question had a significant infestation with body lice and, as you can imagine, this was quite a cause of concern to the patient as it was causing him diffuse pain.
When my resident and I spoke to Paul about the plan for the patient, who was also experiencing housing insecurity, he enthusiastically had already created a plan for the patient, to help him shower and use medication to address the body lice, provided him extra snacks and made sure he received his trays on time and also made sure to keep the rest of the patients safe by destroying bedding, working with EVS to clean the room and maintaining strict PPE.
Now, I absolutely recognize nursing is never easy, but this was one of the worst cases I have seen, ever. Paul made a huge difference to this patient, and to our team. I wanted to share this story because I had hoped his extra mile could be recognized.
