Collaborating with our Professional Development team, Paul assisted in creating and training all registered nurses within care delivery. He brought a nursing perspective to the medical group’s training.
While reviewing upcoming education with our physician partners, Paul noted that there would be a large shift in practice that would impact registered nurses' care delivery. As conjunctivitis research noted, traditional treatment of antibiotic drops was no longer recommended. In the current state, registered nurses treated conjunctivitis symptoms with antibiotics per protocol. More than education for our providers would be needed to ensure a successful transition of evidence into practice.

Paul was instrumental in identifying all teams that were impacted by this evidence. Using data analysis, he determined nursing teams most impacted by these changes and analyzed patient outcomes from the traditional treatment methods. These teams include nurse advice line, eye care, nurse clinic, and message management. Nursing documentation and patient instructions needed to be updated with supporting evidence. Booking guidelines and e-visits must be updated to ensure alignment with the practice changes. General speaking points for non-clinical staff needed to be developed. Paul expertly collaborated with Nursing Informatics, Corporate Communications, data analytics, and multiple operational leaders to accomplish these tasks.

Collaborating with our Professional Development team, Paul assisted in creating and training all registered nurses within care delivery. He brought a nursing perspective to the medical group’s training. Needing a resource to field questions and concerns, Paul stepped up to own feedback from nursing stakeholders. He remained a resource for any provider concerns that arose during and after the shift in practice.

Following the training, Paul has continued to monitor all patients experiencing conjunctivitis symptoms. Reviewing care and patient outcomes, he tracks and reports the data to operational leaders. He also continues to shoulder the responsibilities of this huge culture change. This has been a dramatic change for the organization, but with Paul’s leadership and guidance, it has been one of the most successful shifts in practice. Positive feedback from both the registered nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers confirms that this rollout was a tremendous success. He truly exemplifies an effective change agent and an exemplary registered nurse.
