As the only GI motility nurse in Northern Virginia within our system, Paul exemplifies clinical excellence, compassionate care, and unwavering dedication to his patients. He demonstrates that extraordinary nursing combines technical skill with human connection, trust, and empathy.

When Paul stepped into this role, he faced the daunting challenge of succeeding a nurse who had performed motility testing for over three decades. With no prior experience, he embraced the opportunity with determination. Motility testing requires precision and emotional intelligence. The procedures involve inserting sensitive catheters through the nose into the stomach and can be uncomfortable and anxiety-provoking. Success depends on skillful execution, reassurance, and patience—qualities Paul has mastered.

Paul connects with patients long before they arrive. One family member shared, “The RN that was in charge of this study, Paul Kim, was EXCELLENT. He is worth the wait. The bedside manner is tops! His communication… helped us feel comforted.” He proactively explains procedures, answers questions, and addresses anxieties, ensuring patients feel prepared and respected.

During procedures, Paul tailors his approach to each patient. For some, it means holding their hand; for others, guiding peaceful imagery or offering verbal reassurance. Underlying it all is a deep well of patience and compassion that enables patients to remain calm and complete testing successfully. His procedural completion rate of more than 95% reflects both his technical expertise and the trust he earns from patients.

After procedures, Paul meticulously organizes, cleans, and analyzes data to ensure it is accurate and interpretable for physicians. For patients who struggle, he collaborates with the endoscopy suite to provide mild sedation, quickly learning how to transport specialized equipment and coordinate with unfamiliar staff.

Paul also leads the adoption of new diagnostic technologies. He mastered EndoFLIP, an advanced endoscopy-based test, becoming the only nurse in the Mid-Atlantic region capable of performing it. He also supports the clinic by providing FibroScan testing and administering IV infusions for patients receiving biologic therapies, ensuring comprehensive care. He continues to expand his expertise by attending specialized esophageal and foregut conferences. I am consistently impressed by his ability to analyze data, follow cutting-edge research, and absorb complex medical discussions, bringing the latest knowledge back to his patients and colleagues.

Patients consistently recognize the lasting impact of his care. One wrote, “While I hope I won’t need this procedure again, if I do, I would gladly return… specifically to be seen by RN Kim.” Another shared, “I hope there are more healthcare providers like him.” These sentiments reflect the deep gratitude and trust his patients have for him.

Beyond individual patient care, Paul strengthens the healthcare team and community by ensuring reliable, high-quality testing that supports accurate diagnoses and reduces repeat procedures. In a role that could overwhelm most, he has become a pillar of excellence, ensuring this vital service remains accessible and effective.

Paul is truly one of the most extraordinary, intelligent, and compassionate nurses I have worked with in my 16 years of service at Kaiser. He is a true leader. Without his invaluable contributions to the Gastroenterology Department and to the compassionate care of our patients, expert esophageal function testing would simply not be possible.
