In the early morning hours, Paul received an extremely critical patient to the ICU. He cared for this patient, and sadly, he ultimately passed. His only family member present was his wife. After she spent time with her deceased husband in the room, she came out and said to her nurses, I came here as a wife, and I am leaving here a widow. Sad and heartfelt sentiments from this woman who just experienced a tremendous loss. She then stated that she had no family members to call and no means of transportation to her home. At this point, Paul took it upon himself to use his cell phone to summon an Uber driver, at his expense, to transport her home. Paul walked to the Emergency Room exit and sat with her until the Uber driver arrived. Paul’s caring heart and actions, I am certain, relieved some of the distress that this woman was experiencing due to the sudden and unexpected loss of her husband. I am sure that in the future, she will think about Paul and smile, reflecting on his compassionate care for her at one of the saddest times in her life.
