Paul Oni, RN, BSN

I am also a nurse on the 6B Telemetry Unit at VHC, and I would like to recognize Paul Oni, one of our charge nurses, for the meaningful difference he makes every day for our patients, our staff, and our unit as a whole.

Paul is truly an amazing nurse. He is the kind of person who brings calm, positivity, and encouragement into the unit, even on the most overwhelming days. No matter how busy, complex, or unpredictable the shift becomes, Paul always seems to carry himself with a smile and a steady presence. That attitude makes a difference. It lifts the staff around him, and more importantly, it helps create a safer and more comforting environment for our patients.

Everyone who knows Paul knows how dedicated he is to his work. He is always willing to help, whether it is answering questions, checking on staff, jumping in during a difficult moment, or simply making sure everyone is doing okay. Even when he is not assigned as charge nurse, he naturally steps up and supports the team. He leads not only by his role, but by the way he treats people.

One specific situation that truly showed who Paul is as a nurse involved a patient with altered mental status who needed close support, patience, and frequent redirection throughout the day. Paul remained calm, present, and attentive to the patient’s needs. He made sure the patient stayed safe in the unit and remained free from harm. He also took the time to provide basic hygiene care, maintain the patient’s comfort, and protect the patient’s dignity during a vulnerable time.

What stood out most was not just what Paul did, but how he did it. He spoke to the patient with kindness and reassurance. He used therapeutic communication, constant redirection, patience, and clear education about the plan of care. He never made the patient feel like they were a burden. Because of Paul’s calm presence and skilled nursing approach, the patient remained safe, comfortable, and cared for throughout the entire day.

Paul’s compassion is quiet but powerful. He does not help others for recognition; he helps because that is who he is. He brings clinical excellence, professionalism, patience, and genuine kindness into every shift. He supports his coworkers, advocates for his patients, and reminds others what compassionate nursing looks like in real life.

Paul represents the kind of nurse who makes a lasting impact. He is respected by his team, trusted by his patients, and appreciated by everyone who has the privilege of working with him.

He is truly deserving of The DAISY Award.
