We work in a pre-assessment unit for Orthopaedics. When the COVID-19 pandemic started all pre-assessments were canceled. We were told we would need to be redeployed to other areas/ wards. We were all told we would be sent together with another colleague so we had support. Paula who has worked in pre-assessment for many years (approximately 30 years) was sent alone to Harvey 1 COVID positive ward.
On the first day, she went to Harvey 1, I saw how distressed she was at the thought of going on her own. I went back to our department at the end of the day, to check how Paula was. She was very distressed about the very ill patients she was caring for.
Even with all this, Paula went back to Harvey 1 every day for several weeks. On her own, she did not complain she just went to care for the patients.
I feel she was the one from pre-assessment who went above and beyond.
I feel very proud to work alongside such a kind caring nurse.
