Paula took the time to listen and shared that her son was also in the Navy. He perked up and knew he was in good hands. Paula put him at ease.
My father was a patient on 3N a few times. He was taken to 3N from the ER. Paula was his nurse, and she made him feel human. She understood he was frightened but also upset at being weak and not being able to do for himself, losing his independence. He told stories about his past and days in the Navy. At the time of discharge, Paula was there again, showing her compassion, reviewing the discharge instructions with my mom and dad, reviewing the medications, and ensuring my mom understood. She even called the surgeon's office and scheduled his follow-up appointment!
When he was in for the 3rd time this year, he asked, "Do you think I can have my nurse Paula again?" He truly trusted and respected her.
My father and mother wanted to be sure Paula was recognized in some way, Paula made an impact on my dad and I'm sure with each patient she cares who is in her care. Paula's compassion is genuine, her passion and dedication to the nursing profession are evident, and she is certain she loves what she is doing each day.
Thank you, Paula, for making a difference and being an Extraordinary Nurse!
