I work here at Punxsutawney Area Hospital (PAH) as a nurse and being a patient compared to being the nurse is very different. Over the years my co-workers have known that I have infertility issues and have always been kind, caring, and compassionate when having different procedures and tests done.

I had to come in for a D&C due to a miscarriage. I told myself, “You have to hold this together; they can’t see you crying.” Sitting in the waiting room, waiting to be called back was very nerve-wracking. Tons of emotions were running through my mind. Suddenly, down the hall came Paula. I think she took one look at me and knew. It was like an angel sent for a reason. The first thing she did was open her arms and gave me the biggest hug and told me it's ok. Mind you, this was at the peak of COVID here at PAH and she wasn’t afraid to touch or embrace me. I told her I wasn’t going to cry, but she kept telling me it’s ok to cry, you do what you have to do. When I got into the department she immediately called and got orders in for my pain, as I was experiencing painful cramps as well as nausea. I’m so grateful to work with such an amazing group of people.

My situation that day was awful, but I’m very grateful that Paula was selected to be my nurse. She made me feel so much better and gave me comfort for the awaiting procedure. I couldn’t have asked for better care. She even offered my husband coffee and snacks since we were there at 5 am. Sometimes it’s the little things that go a long way.
