In December 2018, these 2 extraordinary employees helped renew the spirit of a special cancer patient. The patient's son stated that their kindness helped bring their "dad's spark and laughter back" to his life since the cancer diagnosis. While a patient on 8A, the patient mentioned repeatedly to staff that it would be at the top of his bucket list to meet the crew of Survival Flight. You see, he had been watching through his room window, the Survival Flight helicopters fly in and out of the university since he was admitted. He had always wanted to be a pilot and was intrigued every time he saw the helicopters, even managing to get out of his hospital bed to see them fly by his window, waving to them as they took off. That night he talked all night to the 8A staff and doctors about the helicopters and how cool it was that it looked like they could see him waving to them as they lifted off. After hearing this story in the morning, Paula and her tech sprang into action to contact Survival Flight and arrange a surprise visit with him. By noon, one of the Survival Flight nurses was at his bedside, with her arms full of gifts. The gesture made him very emotional. In the days to follow, the Flight Team came to visit and he even got a personal tour of the chopper and helipad. From that time on, the patient waved to all of the helicopters from his room and his son videotaped it so on the days when his dad felt blue, they could pull up the memories, made possible by Paula and her tech interacting on a personal level, and listening to their patient. A huge thank you for going above and beyond, not only for this patient but for all of your patients. Care this extraordinary is not always found in healthcare, but is certainly an example of the "Michigan Difference" we make in our patients' lives every day!
