Paulina Murphy had a huge impact during my three-day stay on the Labor & Delivery floor at Children’s Hospital. I came in on Sunday evening expecting to be induced, but upon arriving, we quickly realized my baby was in breach. Paulina cared for me over the next three days when nothing went as expected. Not only did Paulina care for me medically (checking my vitals, administering medicine, etc.), but she went above and beyond in her attention to detail to ensure I was as comfortable as possible. One small example was that she would pull back and reset the sheets every time I got up to go the bathroom and then make sure my feet were covered with the sheets when I got back into bed. Above all this, the way Paulina cared for my son’s body after he passed was so honoring to him, my family, and me. My son lived for three hours after he was born. Paulina made sure we knew we could spend time with my son for as long as we wanted after he passed. One morning, after the night nurse had left, Paulina came in, and my son’s blankets had gotten soaked through from the night since the ice packs had melted. Paulina quickly re-swaddled his body and made sure he was dry. This was such a gift and truly so honoring. As you can imagine, this was an extremely emotional time for my family, and I. Paulina provided such care for us in the way she was so sensitive when she came into the room. She would do what she needed to get done in the background while we grieved together. As I reflect back on our experience at Children’s, I am forever grateful for Paulina’s care and sensitivity towards myself, my whole family, and especially our son. Paulina went above and beyond her role as a nurse and had a powerful impact during one of our most life-altering experiences.
