The patient was comfortable enough to confide in Payge, and they even had a “heart-to-heart.” After this patient and Payge talked, the patient’s attitude and treatment toward staff completely changed.
We had a very difficult patient on our unit. This patient was known to be verbally abusive toward staff. One day this patient was being verbally abusive and getting increasingly agitated so Payge approached him. Even with this patient’s history, Payge was calm and kind and created a space to have an open conversation with this difficult patient. The patient was comfortable enough to confide in Payge, and they even had a “heart-to-heart.” After this patient and Payge talked, the patient’s attitude and treatment toward staff completely changed. Payge also purchased clothes for this patient and brought them in on her day off to give to him as this patient was homeless, had no family, and was going to a nursing home. Payge shows this kind of compassion to every patient she cares for (even if they aren’t always nice to staff). She is clearly passionate about nursing and always looks at the patient as a whole.
