The unit provided exemplary care for a premature infant who began her life in the NICU and transferred to PICU where she spent the remaining days of her life. The patient was critically ill and spent her entire life in the hospital. Despite ethical challenges, the nursing staff provided heartfelt advocacy for the patient. I watched as they went above and beyond, every single day, to ensure the patient was comfortable and well taken care of amidst numerous difficulties. The nurses utilized their nursing skills, compassion, and creativity in an effort to provide the patient with the best quality of life possible. As the patient’s music therapist, I witnessed the strenuous days when sorrow was tangible amongst the nursing staff. They remained professional and focused on providing quality patient and family care, relying on each other for support. The PICU nurses are the definition of courageous caregivers. I consider it a privilege to observe their work with patients and families staying in the PICU. Their endless efforts, ability to provide high-quality medical care, and dedication to personifying the mission, values, and vision of Lucile Packard deserve to be celebrated and honored.
