One of the challenging parts of being in a pediatric area is dealing with the patient and gaining their trust and rapport so that they can be cooperative and comply with the treatment regimen. Bringing children into the hospital makes them feel scared because of emotional and physical trauma. Especially those aged who already have the knowledge and understanding of what is happening to their body. They are the most sensitive kind of patient due to the high risk of depressions that lead to suicide.

PODC in our hospital doesn’t only provide the medical treatment needed for the patient but also motivates and encourages these children to value themselves and believe that they are special in their own way.

One of the PODC patients, 10 years of age, with a known case of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and with ongoing treatment in PODC for more than a year, transformed to become a role model and involved herself in inspiring her fellow patients, especially in joining activities that make them more comfortable and productive while on chemotherapy treatment. The patient suffered from trauma coming to the hospital. She was uncooperative, shouting at the nurses and even verbalizing unacceptable words. She became depressed, especially in those times when her body changed, such as falling hair due to chemotherapy. To support her physically and emotionally, staff from PODC comforted and motivated her that these challenges in her life would pass by. They let her realize that she is valued and that she is a unique person. They let her choose the nurse with whom she is comfortable. They make the PODC unit her second home until such time that she becomes at peace coming to the unit, grateful to all the staff, and even friendly with the patients.

As of now, the patient is the representative for the pediatric oncology patient and has been invited to many children's activities. She was the party coordinator and spokesperson in the celebration of International Childhood Cancer Day, National Saudi Day, and even during Ramadan and Eid celebrations. She actively participates and comes to the unit, doing rounds and inviting her fellow patients to join in this kind of activity. She is also organizing an activity that will be held next month, entitled “Little Creative”. Through her experience, she influences another patient to be positive and cheerful. She also gives hope to the families of our patients, especially those who are newly diagnosed.
