We showed this patient what we can accomplish with care, compassion, respect, advocacy, and collaboration of Orlando Health - Arnold Palmer Hospital PSCU.
Our patient was an 18-year-old male patient who was admitted for an oral-nasal fistula repair from a previous injury. This patient was an orphan who aged out of foster care and stole the heart of the nurses on the unit for being an amazing, sweet, and ambitious patient. He talked about his dreams of being a sonographer in the future and working in healthcare to make others feel better as we have made him feel better during his stay. His primary nurse, Iris Kim, decided to reach out to the Customer Service Specialist to get the patient some clothes to go home from the hospital and it turned into multiple nurses donating clothes, toiletries, games, food, and many other toys/games from the Child Life department for the patient to take home. The team collected an entire duffle bag full of clothes, socks, underwear, coats, and other items for the patient to take home at discharge. Everyone on the unit was very invested in helping this patient and he was so extremely thankful for all we were able to bring him. To say I am proud of the nurse, Iris Kim and the rest of this unit for what we accomplished today would be an understatement. Today we showed this patient what we can accomplish with care, compassion, respect, advocacy, and collaboration of Orlando Health - Arnold Palmer Hospital PSCU.

A patient who is well known to our unit and has been inpatient more in the past year than not, was admitted for a prolonged hospital course. The patient's mom has been at the bedside incessantly caring for her daughter. Not only has she been stressed about her daughter, but she is pregnant with another daughter on the way. The PSCU team got together to throw a baby shower for the mom to allow her to celebrate her soon-to-come little one. The team bought clothes, diapers, boppys, other essential items, and some fun baby presents, as well. Nurses who weren't working came in to bring lunch for the event. However, on the day of the event, the mom was not feeling well and tested positive for Covid-19. The team modified the event so that the mom could still enjoy it in some capacity and it was a very bright spot during a tough day for her. The teamwork displayed to go above and beyond for patients and their families demonstrate the compassion and genuine care this unit has for the humans--big and little--that they care for.
