A new mother arrived in labor without her husband. Her husband was a firefighter who was fighting the Thomas Fire. The mother described the fear she felt about possibly having her baby without her husband being present. Then she met Peggy. She stated that Peggy has a way about her that calmed her fears and helped her feel safe. As time went on, she began to notice that she felt like her mother. Peggy's calm and supportive demeanor actually helped the patient feel more comfortable about the potential of not having her husband present for the birth of their baby. Fortunately, her husband was able to be relieved of his duties with the fire and made it to the hospital in time for the baby's birth. This patient stated that she will never forget the kindness that she felt from Peggy.

A new mother who is autistic wanted to recognize Peggy because she has several sensory triggers that potentially elicit a painful and sometimes violent reaction. You can imagine how this mother must have feared the unknown of a C-section. The mom told us how she noticed that Peggy really listened to her and then introduced her to everyone in the OR. She states that Peggy went on to explain this patient's fears and triggers. Both the patient and her husband said they really felt heard. She said every person in the OR heeded what Peggy said and she set the stage for a calm and wonderful delivery. Peggy didn't stop there. The patient went on to tell us that she advocated for her throughout her experience in Labor and Delivery and when she was transferred to Mother/Baby. This young family stated they had a lot of experience when people didn't listen to them and the situation escalates. With Peggy, they felt safe. They felt like they were understood and built a strong bond.

Peggy's influence does not end with patient care. Nurses on Mother/Baby, NICU, and of course L&D think the world of Peggy. Mother/Baby nurses describe her using one word, amazing. She would go anywhere to help anybody. They will tell you Peggy is always there for them as a resource. If a patient is hemorrhaging, she is there for them. If they need her, she comes without question. They notice that she really knows her patients and has a great relationship with her patients and their families. She sets the patient up for success.
The NICU will tell you that Peggy is always a team player. When they need help, she has been known to come extra or rearrange her schedule so she can care for feeders and growers. As a charge nurse, she works to make sure that each unit and the patient needs are met.
Peggy is a charge nurse, Clinician IV (working on Clinician V), educator, helps coordinate the Perinatal Clinical Excellence Series and serves on the hospital Education Committee. She is also the chairperson of L&D Practice Council and teaches NRP. Staff who have taken NRP from her say that she communicates in such a warm and non-threatening way. "She really takes the fear out of NRP".
She is not one to seek the limelight. Her purpose in life is to help others. Maybe that comes from having 7 kids and 22 grandchildren. Peggy is a true DAISY Nurse.
