When my son was diagnosed with leukemia, his nurse, Penelope, would take as much time as she could to help him get accessed. She would call in his favorite staff to keep him calm and happy. We lovingly refer to them as the "Trifecta." Penelope has worked with him, never losing her calm voice. She told us that soon, he would get better at accessing. We didn't believe it. Just by looking at us, she knew when to be comforting and extra compassionate. Sure enough, after 4 years of accessing, he would only let Penelope access his port, and without any tears! Penelope has laughed with us and cried right alongside my husband and me. I am not sure how some families get through a diagnosis so horrible, but I can credit Penelope Canel with a large part of our success. We could never pay back Penelope for all of the caring she gives out. She is a gem at CHP. We are incredibly humbled by the entire 9C clinic staff from the schedulers to the top doctors. We have been treated like gold from the first second upon hearing, "Your son has cancer".
