May 2026 Honoree
Penelope Sugg, RN
I would like to recognize Nurse Penny for the extraordinary, compassionate care she provided to a Veteran in our pulmonary clinic.
According to the Veteran, Penny cared for her over a 3-day period and made a lasting impact. The Veteran shared, "She cares. She listened to me, and she even gave me pink roses for Mother's Day. She is a great nurse."
This gesture deeply touched her and made her feel seen and valued. This particular Veteran is known to be difficult to please and often struggles with compliance. However, the pulmonary clinician reported that she was genuinely impressed by Penny's kindness, patience, and personalized care. Penny's ability to connect with her, build trust, and meet her emotional and physical needs reflects exceptional practice.
Penny demonstrated strong HRO behaviors —including mindfulness, empathy, and awareness of individual patient needs —while ensuring a safe, supportive environment. She also exemplified our ICARE values every step of the way:
Integrity- acting with sincerity and genuine compassion.
Compassion- taking time to listen, understand, and provide emotional comfort.
Accountability- delivering consistent and reliable care across all 3 days.
Respect- treating the veteran with dignity, patience, and kindness, regardless of challenges.
Excellence- going above and beyond, offering personalized care that made the Veteran feel honored on Mother's Day.
Penny's thoughtful actions and patient-centered approach transformed this Veteran's experience and left a meaningful, positive impression. For these reasons, she deserves recognition for the extraordinary nursing care she provides.
