Pennie began her career at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital (BSSF) as a new graduate in 1978. Since that time, she has assumed many leadership positions in the organization. Her first management role was in 1984 when she became the Nurse Manager for the medical telemetry unit, followed by the Director of Critical Care, and then Senior Nurse Executive. Pennie has been the Chief Nursing Officer of BSSF since 1995. The culture of an organization follows its leader and that is most definitely the case at St. Francis. Pennie leads with compassion and has mentored other leaders to lead in the same manner. This leadership has developed a family-based culture at BSSF. During our first Magnet designation experience in 2010, the appraisers were a little concerned when some of the staff did not know who the "CNO" was. When the appraiser mentioned Pennie's name, the staff responded "Oh, Pennie! Why didn't you say so- I just spoke to her in the cafeteria,". They thought this was wonderful and identified Pennie's transformational leadership and visibility/accessibility as an exemplar. Pennie's leadership has led St. Francis to achieve two huge firsts for nursing- we became the first hospital in the low country to achieve Magnet designation in 2010 and then the first hospital in the state of South Carolina to achieve Magnet designation three times in 2020. If it were not for Pennie's leadership and love for nursing, these achievements would not have been possible. She advocates for her leaders and her nurses on a continuous basis and goes above and beyond to make you feel like you are the most important person when you meet with her, despite her huge "to do" list that you imagine is just waiting for her. She is humble and approachable and the true epitome of a transformational and servant leader. She sees potential in others that they may not see in themselves and gives them opportunities and room to grow. She will forever be the face of BSSF nursing. As she leaves the BSSF CNO position to assume the RSFH CNO position full-time, her legacy of nursing leadership will live on in those she has mentored and in the structures and firm foundation of nursing excellence that she has established. Pennie is truly one of a kind, and we are so lucky to call her ours. What a blessing!
