The patient was extremely anxious about the IV stick but Penny was able to take away that anxiety with patience and just simple kindness.
I had the pleasure of doing a visit with Penny for the first time about a week ago. She is a nurse that practices with such dignity, professionalism, respect, and models the mission statement for Cincinnati Children's. Penny kindly precepted me for a Remicade visit for a young lady. Although this patient had these infusions monthly, Penny treated her like it was her first time receiving this medication. Explaining everything that she was going to do, why she was going to do it and what to expect. The patient was extremely anxious about the IV stick but Penny was able to take away that anxiety with patience and just simple kindness. She warmed up several sites on her arms and waited until she was confident in a vein that had popped up for her to be able to insert an IV. I could feel the trust that this young girl had in Penny.
Throughout the visit, the patient began sneezing and coughing which she had stated was due to allergies. Penny explained to her that it was protocol that we don our gowns at this time due to her symptoms and covid precautions. She explained the reasoning for it as she didn't want to just surprise her by putting all our PPE on. Penny also used her BP bulb to create a distraction for the patient while she inserted the IV. She told her to squeeze the bulb and think about that instead of what was actually going on.
As we were scheduling the next visit, Mom asked when Penny was scheduled so that the next visit could be scheduled with her. Mom reported that her daughter was completely comfortable with Penny's care and appreciated the way she comforted her and treated her every time she came to see her.
Penny educated me and the patient, every step of the way about what she was doing and what she was going to do next. Penny worked with the Mom and patient to schedule a time that would work for them. She offered to adjust her schedule to accommodate them and provide excellent primary nursing.
