I received a phone call from my friend who lives in Miami. She had just found out that her father had suddenly had a heart attack and died. She knew he was here and asked me if I was working because her dad was alone when he died. She was hysterically trying to gather an overnight bag to get here ASAP. I went down to the ED to see if the charge nurse would be willing to hold the patient there until my friend arrived, straight off the highway. Penny was charge and said "yes". I thanked her and came back at 10:30 pm with my friend. At that time, Penny told us to take our time with the patient. My friend then asked if she could have one last New Year's with her dad and stay with him until midnight to ring in the New Year. Penny didn't hesitate and said, "of course she can, that's what I would want if it was my dad". All I could do was hug her so tight and cry for my friend because Penny's actions were the most compassionate and caring I've felt in a long time. Penny was nothing short of awesome that night and I am grateful and so is my friend. Thank you.
