Their efforts and willingness to work seamlessly with the team involved is imperative to providing safe quality care and is much needed and greatly appreciated.
I would like to take a moment to recognize and nominate the surgical team for their past and continued efforts to support the Emergency Department and Inpatient Units during critical events.  During the past six months there have been numerous events in the Emergency Department that they have assisted with.  There are a couple that stick out to me.  A few months back we had a patient whom we conducted an ultrasound on and much to her surprise, she was nine months pregnant and her abdominal pain was active labor and contractions.  We were able to mobilize some resources that included our surgical team and Dr. McKeel, OBGYN was able to leave the clinic and come to the hospital to assist.  Terri Rowley, RN, stayed through the disposition of the patient to Sparrow Lansing.  Their actions exemplified extraordinary compassionate care.  They assisted the patient with breathing and pushing through contractions, provided education and reassurance to the soon to be first time parents, and remained calm ensuring the team had everything needed should the delivery occur.  The years of combined OB experience Terri and Kim have were greatly appreciated in this case and future cases to come.

In other critical events such as Level 1 Traumas, Cardiac Arrest, or Priority 1 cases the Surgical Team is very responsive to events.  For example, the General Surgeons are always willing and able to put in central lines, insert chest tubes or even do compressions on patients.  The CRNAs are always there to manage airways, and the nurses have helped with IV insertions and passing medications.  The Surgical Techs also help out with being runners during these difficult times.  The resources that they provide as a team when they respond to the unit in need is so incredibly valuable to the quality of care provided to the patient during a critical event.  Their efforts and willingness to work seamlessly with the team involved are imperative to providing safe quality care and are much needed and greatly appreciated.

I wanted to recognize the Surgery Team.  I have noticed each time we have a code, they will remain and act as runners to get needed items.  When codes occur in the Inpatient unit, they stay and answer call lights while the Inpatient nurses are tied up in the code.  This is true teamwork across the lines.
