The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses honors, rewards, and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by our SMC nurses every day. Today I would like to share the below stories of one of our excellent RNs on the Acute Medical Unit. Every day that Perla Tang works, her impact of compassion can easily be seen. She is often recognized by her patients for her exceptional care, but because she is so humble, these praises go underappreciated. I can assure you, that they are not unnoticed. I hear what our patients are telling her, and she is quick to let them know that she is just doing her job or it is her pleasure. Sure, that is true, but the consistency in her contributions and compassion makes Perla a true DAISY Nurse.
One of her patient's daughters wrote, "Perla is very caring and loving with all patients, especially my mother. She went out of her way to meet my mom's needs. Perla is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. Her smile, positive attitude, and pleasing and motivated comments are "Healing Spice". Her dynamic energy was exhibited throughout the very long shift. It is obvious that she loves what she is doing."
The son from that same patient wrote, "We want to nominate Perla Tang for the extraordinary care that she provided for our mom. Perla is a hardworking, attentive, and caring individual. She made herself available with a friendly smile throughout Mom's stay. We acknowledge and appreciate her endless work."
Another patient grateful patient wrote, "I just want to say the staff has been incredible. Perla was extremely accommodating with her patient to make sure she was comfortable. I was extremely impressed."
Perla is also recognized for her patient advocacy and compassion by one of our Physical Therapists. "Perla is consistently advocating for her patients. She encourages them all to mobilize, works quickly and efficiently with kindness and compassion, yet she is firm. She is a DAISY Nurse in my mind. Not from a single event, but because she is consistent with her excellent care and concern for her patients. She recently spent the whole PT session translating for a Spanish speaking patient and encouraged her as well as assisting me. Well done Perla!"
Interpersonal skills, assessment skills, decision-making capabilities, clinical skills, educator skills, focus on patient and family-centered care and/or collaborates well with the Patient Care Team. I believe that all of those represent Perla Tang in the every day, yet exceptional work that she does in providing Simply Better care.
