Every shift I work with him, I am reminded what it looks like to be not only an amazing nurse but a truly exceptional human being.
I will start this by saying that there are numerous times where Peter has made a difference in my shifts; far too many to count. Peter stands out because of who he is. He brightens every day, always shows up, and supports me from the simplest question to the most stressful situations. I am a float, which means that I have limited stability from shift to shift. When I am working with Peter, I instantly feel a sense of calm. I remember a stressful code where a patient was hemorrhaging and required a rapid transfusion. I had never done that before, and Peter stayed with me until everything was done. He walked me through each step and supported me far after the code was completed. Every shift I work with him, I am reminded what it looks like to be not only an amazing nurse but a truly exceptional human being. I was working on a separate floor in the West building and had called a code for a patient. Peter, being charge on 1W, came up to the floor as is protocol. He immediately asked if I was okay, checked in and seeing his smiling face I was filled once again with a sense that everything was going to be okay. What stands out to me most about this situation is that the next day, I was back on the same unit, and I got a call from Peter just to check in. It was a stressful floor and a very busy shift. In that moment, I was so grateful. I am not a 1W nurse; he did not have to reach out to me, and yet he did. That is who he is. I work with hundreds of nurses across this hospital, and I can say with the utmost confidence that no one deserves to be recognized more than Peter. This hospital, its patients, and every employee are made better as a result of him. I am truly grateful for everything he has and continues to do for me and those around him.
