Peter Kilgallen, RN

I would like to recognize Peter, Night Shift ICU RN for demonstrating extraordinary compassion, clinical excellence and a deep commitment to patient and family centered care during one of the most difficult moments a family can experience.

Peter admitted a long-term KPSF patient, whom had a prolonged and complex hospitalization that included multiple unit transfers and prior ICU stays, back to the ICU following a cardiac arrest on the med-tele unit. Despite timely interventions and the ICU team’s best efforts, the patient’s condition continued to decline rapidly after arrival.

As the ICU team partnered with the patient’s loved ones to discuss goals of care, the decision was made to transition to comfort-focused measures. In this moment of profound grief and uncertainty, Peter's presence became a source of stability, guidance, and peace for the family.

Peter went above and beyond by taking the time to sit with the patient’s partner and family, ensuring they felt supported, informed and not alone. He gently and thoughtfully explained what to expect, including the process of compassionate extubation (breathing tube removal), using language that was both clear and deeply sensitive. Peter encouraged them to take their time, ask questions and fully process their emotions without pressure, creating a space of trust, dignity and compassion.

What truly distinguished this moment was Peter's remarkable ability to connect on a deeply human level. He shared a heartfelt and detailed story from when he had cared for the patient in the ICU the previous week, which painted a vivid picture of the patient as a person—not just a clinical case. In doing so, he honored the patient’s life and individuality, bringing meaning and connection into an incredibly painful moment. This act deeply moved the patient’s partner, who later expressed profound and lasting gratitude for the care and presence Peter provided.

Even after the patient’s passing, Peter's compassion did not end. He took it upon himself to personally perform postmortem care with great respect and intention. Peter then accompanied the patient to the morgue himself. This quiet, final act of dignity and reverence reflected a deep sense of responsibility and humanity—ensuring the patient was never alone, even in death. It was a profoundly moving experience that demonstrated Peter's unwavering commitment to honoring the patient’s life from beginning to the very end.

Peter's actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact nurses have not only on outcomes, but on the human experience of care, healing, loss and even in death. He transformed a moment of heartbreak into one of connection, dignity and meaning. They will remain a lasting reminder of the profound difference compassionate nursing can make. The care he provided reflects the very best of who we are as nurses (rooted in empathy, presence, and humanity) and stands as a powerful example of the impact one person can have.

I feel incredibly grateful and profoundly blessed to have witnessed this as one of the most beautiful and meaningful moments in my entire nursing career. Thank you, Peter! Our ICU team is truly lucky to have you! Your compassion touches more lives than you may ever realize.
