He recognized me instantly. He smiled, but his expression quickly shifted because he could tell something was wrong. He sees countless patients and families every day, yet he remembered me.
I am nominating Peter for the DAISY Award because he exemplifies everything a nurse should be—clinically exceptional, deeply compassionate, and profoundly human.

My husband underwent spinal surgery. From the moment we met Peter in pre-op, he was a breath of fresh air. My husband was scared of the unknown but hopeful, and Peter immediately created an atmosphere of calm, trust, and reassurance. As a nurse myself for 20 years, I can recognize when a nurse goes above and beyond. Peter exceeded every expectation. He explained each step of the pre-op process thoroughly—not just to my husband but also to me and my in-laws who were anxiously at the bedside. He was warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and brought just the right amount of humor to ease everyone’s nerves. He made a stressful moment feel manageable, and we all felt safe in his care. I remember thinking, I wish we could keep Peter for the entire stay.

Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a one-night stay turned into three due to unexpected complications. During those days, we encountered a mix of nurses, but none came close to the caliber of Peter. After three nights of no sleep, worry, and growing uncertainty about my husband’s condition, I went downstairs to the coffee shop feeling defeated. I looked like I hadn’t slept or showered in days, because I hadn’t. I was exhausted, scared, and emotionally drained. And then, in the hallway, I saw Peter. He recognized me instantly. He smiled, but his expression quickly shifted because he could tell something was wrong. He sees countless patients and families every day, yet he remembered me.

As he approached, I completely broke down in his arms. He hugged me without hesitation and gently asked what was going on. I don’t know if he was on break or heading somewhere important, but in that moment, he made me his priority. I told him everything that had happened over the last few days, and the look on his face was one of genuine concern—like I was telling him about his own family member. He listened, he validated my fears, and he offered guidance and resources to help us navigate the situation. His compassion in that moment is something I will never forget. Peter didn’t just care for my husband—he cared for all of us. He cared with skill, with heart, and with humanity. He is the kind of nurse who changes the trajectory of a patient’s experience simply by being who he is.

Your institution is incredibly lucky to have him, and he deserves to be honored in every way possible. Peter is a remarkable nurse and an extraordinary human being. He made an unforgettable impact on our family during one of the most stressful times of our lives. For that, I am forever grateful.
