It's not about just the knowledge of technical skills a nurse has, it's about their behaviour, attitude, and approach which makes the difference, and Phil was a role model in this regard.
Our dad was admitted to A&E, and shortly after transferred to the Cardiac Department. It was very unexpected. We didn't know why Dad was unwell and was deteriorating so quickly. Nurse Phil Baker in particular, stood out as an incredibly professional, caring, and supportive member of staff. He explained on numerous occasions what was happening, and what treatment they were giving Dad so we all understood. What made Phil an above-and-beyond Nurse for us was not only the care and action he took for Dad to ensure he was not in any pain but also his care for the family during this time. Always checking in with our mum, and ensuring we as a family were taking breaks, getting rest, and generally caring for us as well as dad. He also kept the family informed in Australia as they made their way to the UK to see Dad before he passed. Finally, even on his day off, he called into the ward to see how Dad was doing and check if we were okay. This is far and beyond the scope of his roles and responsibilities. It's not about just the knowledge of technical skills a nurse has, it's about their behaviour, attitude, and approach which makes the difference, and Phil was a role model in this regard. Having Phil around made our experience a more comforted and cared-for one in what were terrible circumstances. He deserves to be recognized.
