I am writing as the wife of a patient and not an employee. Today, my husband was a surgical patient at Methodist Germantown Hospital, and although I am completely exhausted from being there for over 12 hours, I feel like I need to spend the time to let you know about a beautiful experience we had with a nurse. When we finally made it to a post-op room after the recovery phase, I encountered a fantastic discharge nurse. This nurse sat right next to me at my husband's bedside and explained to me all discharge instructions thoroughly. Although the doctor had covered these discharge instructions before surgery, she wanted to ensure that we understood every detail. Her behavior towards my husband was extremely caring, compassionate, and genuine. After taking note of her exemplary attention while my husband was going through the discharge phase (vitals, assessment, urinating, IV removal from an extremely hairy arm, and assisting with getting him out of bed to sit, then making sure he could ambulate with difficulty), I went to look at her ID badge because I knew I wanted to let everyone know what a phenomenal experience we had. When I looked at the badge, I had to do a double take because this was a nurse from OR Nurses Nationwide, not a Methodist RN. This was Phyllis Savage. Before I left to get the car and even when Phyllis rolled my husband in his wheelchair outside, I thanked her and told her she was terrific. I don't think she knew I was a nurse from the administration or worked at this facility, which many times makes you feel like the staff is forced to treat you better since you're an employee. She chose to care for us like we were family and I am so impressed and thankful.
