... When the winter snow storm of 2015 came with a vengeance, Phyllis, didn't hesitate to stay after her night shift was over to rest, to insure there would be nursing leadership and coverage for the ICU for the next night shift. She did this several days. Phyllis travels greater than an hour to her home. She was promptly "up and at it" at 6 pm, making assignments including delegating her own full assignment.

Phyllis is always cheerful, professional, knowledgeable and kind to the patients. She is quick to offer solutions to issues. I remember one night in particular, after a heavy snow, I was here late and rounding checking on staffing and patients. The Shift leaders were still in report when they were approached by a patient's family member requesting their family member be bathed. It was the beginning of shift change around 7:30 pm when often times it is most chaotic - and not an ideal time for bathing. Phyllis did not make any excuses or offer any hesitation at all. She promptly responded with a smile, collected linen and immediately went in and gave the bath. Often times we hear or have said ourselves - "They aren't my patient, but I will tell their nurse" This patient was not Phyllis' direct care patient, yet no one knew the difference!

I have had the opportunity to observe Phyllis interacting with staff and patients on several occasions. One night, once again, when it was extremely busy, Phyllis took the time to comfort a dying patient. She cradled this patient and sang to him. These are just a few examples of instances I have captured, merely just walking through the ICU. Phyllis exudes a certain warmth that demonstrates her honesty, integrity, sincerity and fairness. These are just a few of the very endearing qualities found in Phyllis.

Phyllis remains dedicated to her work and continues to put her peers and patients first. Her strength and faith keep this lady's standards the epitome of the DAISY award. Phyllis continually:

Establishes a special connection with a patient/family

Has significantly made a difference in the life of a patient

Shows empathy in all situations

Is an outstanding role model for the nursing profession

Generates enthusiasm and energy towards meeting the challenges of nursing

Consistently exhibits excellent interpersonal skills

Exemplifies the essence of professional nursing in all activities

Thank you Phyllis for making a difference in my life.
