Preslie is constantly advocating for her patients, but last week, while dealing with a difficult discharge, she provided care above and beyond what is required from her. This particular veteran needed to be discharged with Oxygen supplementation and a ride home (about 5 miles south of the hospital). According to the veteran, he did not have family or friends available to give him a ride. Preslie reached out to the VA travel department and tried to arrange for transportation, but unfortunately, the veteran did not qualify. As it was close to 1400, and over 105 degrees outside, Preslie was concerned about the patient's wellbeing and was worried that he will end up on the street in scorching temperatures. She patiently advised himto wait until she found the bus schedule, to assure that the veteran didn't wait outside too long. Also, she asked the patient if he has any money for the bus ticket and found out that the veteran had no money with him. She then proceeded to give the veteran her own money so he could pay for the ride. Ultimately the veteran was getting impatient and did not want to wait for the bus schedule, and refused to be taken to the bus station on 7th street by another staff. He left the floor without the oxygen and walked to the bus station. She also called him several times after he left to make sure he got home. She finally did get him and he was at home. This was done while providing care for 4 other patients. Although ultimately the veteran chose to leave, Preslie' s efforts for safe discharge are not left unrecognized.
Preslie Tidwell exhibits the I CARE values by caring for those who served, caring for her coworkers, choosing to do what is right instead of what is easy, and performing her duties to the best of her abilities.
